Shropshire’s 999 service has 150 call-outs
Saturday 1st January 2011, 11:30AM GMT.
New Year’s Eve celebrations in Shropshire sparked nearly 150 emergency calls to the ambulance service.
West Midlands Ambulance received 149 emergency calls between 8pm yesterday and 5am today.
Bosses said the night, which is typically the service’s busiest of the year, was dominated by alcohol-related incidents including fights, assaults, people collapsing, falling over and injuring themselves.
Temporary minor injury units were set up across the region to ease the strain on ambulances and hospitals.
In Shrewsbury the unit was hosted by the St John Ambulance in Priory Road. Staff reported a quiet night in the town centre, with one man attending with a head injury.
In Oswestry, fire crews rescued a teenager asleep on a wall in Castle View at about 5.40pm yesterday.
West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Chris Kowalik said the number of 999 calls steadily increased towards midnight but the peak rate of calls came in between 2am and 4am.
WMAS chief executive Anthony Marsh said: “The public should be proud of the staff and volunteers who gave up their night to ensure the safety of everyone in the West Midlands.”
