Tributes to Shropshire music teacher
Friday 31st December 2010, 11:34AM GMT.
A former Shropshire war hero’s wife who taught music to hundreds of children in the county in a career spanning more than 30 years has died at 95.
Vera Elizabeth Duncalfe, of Talbot Fields, High Ercall, was an accomplished pianist and a graduate of the London Trinity School of Music.
She was married to Roy Duncalfe, a member of the Long Range Desert Group during the Second World War, the hit-and-run team of crack soldiers who were the forerunners of the SAS.
Mr Duncalfe died in 1999. He became a policeman after the war and was first stationed at Market Drayton with his wife.
Mrs Duncalfe taught music at Hiatt Ladies’ College in Wellington and Wenlock Edge School before moving to Wrekin Road Primary School and Park Junior School.
She died on December 16 at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital after a short illness. She leaves a daughter, Jenny, grandchildren Sean, aged 47, Heidi, aged 45, and 28-year-old Daniel, and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs Hughes, aged 64, said: “Mum was an excellent pianist.Over the years she must have taught hundreds of children.
“She was a very private person but since her death we have received so many lovely cards from people to whom she obviously meant a lot.”
Mrs Duncalfe’s funeral will be held at St Michael and All Angels Church in High Ercall at 2pm on Tuesday.
