Thieves take cigarettes in Telford shop raid

A gang of hooded raiders dressed in dark boiler suits escaped with a haul of cigarettes today after smashing their way into a Telford newsagent’s.

They are believed to have fled on a scrambler motorbike following the smash and grab raid on Martins in Russell Square, Madeley.

Detectives were examining CCTV footage of the burglary, which happened at about 12.40am when the shop was empty and locked up.

Police said the men, who were wearing dark coloured boiler suits and balaclavas, forced a roller shutter at the premises before smashing a glass door to gain entry.

They ransacked the shop and stole a large quantity of cigarettes from a display.

Detective Chief Inspector Edwards said: “We believe three to four men broke into the newsagents and stole a large amount of cigarettes from within.

“It is believed they were wearing clothing which looked like dark coloured boiler suits and balaclavas and we think they all made their escape on an orange or yellow scrambler bike.”

He added: “It is likely that the suspects will be trying to get rid of the cigarettes and will probably be selling them on. If you are offered cigarettes don’t buy them bec- ause they are stolen goods. Instead, come and tell us.”

Mr Edwards urged anyone with information to call police on 0300 333 3000.
