Telford death inquiry referred to police watchdog
Friday 31st December 2010, 1:27PM GMT.
The death of a disabled man whose body was discovered at his Shropshire bungalow was referred to a police watchdog.
The case of Lionel Astbury – who was found dead in Leegomery, Telford – was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission by Telford police.
It is understood the case was referred as police had been called to Mr Astbury’s home in Halifax Drive just hours before his body was discovered on December 21.
It is understood police were first called by neighbours when they heard Mr Astbury in a dispute outside his home and again hours later when a window was smashed at Mr Astbury’s property. They then found his body inside his home.
But the IPCC today said the case was assessed and had been referred back for a local-level investigation by West Mercia Police.
The death of 58-year-old Mr Astbury, who was a talented horse rider with the Riding for the Disabled Association, sparked a murder probe until a post mortem showed he died of natural causes.
It is understood he died from a heart condition.
A man arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder was released without charge.
