Shropshire war hero finds ideal home with TV’s Kirsty and Phil
Friday 31st December 2010, 8:00PM GMT.
A Shropshire soldier who lost his legs in a roadside bomb blast in Afghanistan has found the home of his dreams thanks to the help of televison’s most famous house hunters.
Captain Nick Beighton, of Radbrook Green, Shrewsbury, and his partner Leki Stones, who is also in the military, featured in Kirstie and Phil’s Homes for Heroes programme on Channel 4 last night.
Nick suffered devastating injuries after stepping on an improvised explosive device (IED) in Helmand Province in October, 2009. He has now finished his rehabilitation and will return to work on January 10.
Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer presented the special programme to mark the 10-year anniversary of their hit show Location, Location, Location.
And after the celebrity house hunters were given a challenge to find Nick and Leki the idyllic Shropshire pad with a budget of £315,000, they came up with four properties for the couple to view.
The show featured them looking around homes in Westbury, Arscott, and two in Asterley, all near Shrewsbury. But Nick’s determination to ensure they picked the house of their dreams reduced Kirstie to tears.
Despite problems with regards to getting up the stairs and access for his wheelchair on the landing, the pair chose a listed property in Asterley.
Nick said he was thinking to the future when he will be able to walk more easily on his prosthetic limbs rather than taking the “easy option” of a single-storey barn conversion.
Their chosen home had an asking price of £260,000 but the vendor accepted their offer of £250,000.
After the couple received the good news while in the Pound Inn at Leebotwood, presenter Phil said: “I think rarely in 10 years have the stakes been quite so high.
“Kirstie and I absolutely had to deliver on this so I couldn’t be happier for them. It’s a great house at a fantastic price and what a truly exceptional couple. It’s mission complete.”
Nick said he was “surprised” to have brought Kirstie to tears but said he had been touched by the moment.
