Shrewsbury road closed after cyclist in collision with lorry

A female cyclist suffered a serious leg injury after she was in collision with a lorry today in an incident which closed one of the main routes through Shrewsbury during the morning rush hour.
The woman, who is believed to be about 40 years old, was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital following the crash which happened at about 7.15am at the pedestrian crossing outside the Shrewsbury Hotel in Smithfield Road.
The cyclist’s injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
John Hawker, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, today said two ambulances had attended the scene.
He said: “We received a call at 7.15am to the reports of a HGV in collision with a cyclist near the Shrewsbury Hotel.
“The woman, who is believed to be about 40, suffered a serious leg injury and was treated at the scene before being taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
“No-one else was injured in the incident.”
Constable Chilton Owen, of West Mercia Police, said the crash had led to the road being closed for an hour with a diversion put in place.
He said: “The road was closed at about 7.30am and was reopened at about 8.30am.
“It was a cyclist who was in collision with a lorry.
“It happened at the pedestrian crossing outside The Shrewsbury Hotel.”
The lorry was moved to a nearby car park following the incident to allow the road to reopen.
