Oswestry in Tree of Light charity fundraising challenge

Rotarians are challenging residents in Shropshire to help them beat this year’s Tree of Light fundraising record. The Oswestry Rotary Tree of Light campaign has seen 220 people make a donation helping to raise nearly £2,500.
The fundraiser was launched on November 26 at 6pm with a special ceremony performed by Lord Plum, the former president of the National Farmers’ Union.
Now the Rotary club’s members are calling for people to carry on with their donations so they can beat last year’s top record total of around £3,000.
Graham Moss, PR chairman for the club, said: “We are just short of £2,000, excluding gift aid, and we hope to reclaim £400 through gift aid so the total that we can distribute to the charities is £2,400.”
Mr Moss said a number of donations is still trickling in and he hopes they will continue until the end of the campaign on January 6, the 12th night.
All the money raised will be split between a number of charities including Hope House children’s hospice, air ambulance, the Cricket Federation for People with Disabilities, North Shropshire Special Olympics and other Rotary good causes.
The Tree of Light is not just a fundraiser but also an opportunity for people to mark a happy event or remember a loved one in the festive season.
Anyone can sponsor a light on the tree for a minimum donation of £5. They will also be given a commemorative card as an acknowledgement for the gift.
