Complaints over Bridgnorth one-way street plans

Residents have complained about a scheme to turn one of the main routes into Bridgnorth into a one-way street.

Two-way traffic was stopped from using the narrow Whitburn Street in the town centre in July but now concerns have been aired about vehicles, including buses having to mount the pavements in the street, because of delivery vehicles which are parking in the road.

The town council has had numerous complaints about the Whitburn Street enhancement scheme.

The authority was also aware that two bus route companies that use the road were also not happy with the arrangements.

A council spokesman said: “Delivery vehicles are not able to get into the loading bays because of their square ends and are therefore parking in the roadway itself.

“This means all vehicles including buses are mounting the pavements to get up the road.

“CCTV evidence has confirmed the extent of the problem and, on behalf of the town council, the locum town clerk has written to Shropshire Council.” Councillor Brian Jones, as the town council bus representative, has also written to Shropshire Council.

Val Gill, town mayor, said that at a recent town council meeting “it was pointed out that the relief road was built at great cost and is not really being used as effectively as it might be.”

She said the question was raised as to whether buses should be using Whitburn Street or the relief road.

Keith Jones, senior highways engineer at Shropshire Council, said: “We installed a bus stop in Whitburn Street at the request of a local councillor, who had identified a local need.

“But we are still in the process of seeing how the traffic flow will change following the opening of the relief road and the enhancements to Whitburn Street.

“We are holding conversations with Arriva about bus use in the area, and we would encourage more vehicles to use the relief road whenever possible.”

The enhancement work to Whitburn Street saw wider pavements being created to help reduce the speed of traffic.

The above comments seem to suggest that an irrational dislike of a town and a low IQ are somehow linked.

It would do some people a lot of good to have to live in more ‘challenging’ areas of the country, they might then realise that to live in a beautiful town like Bridgnorth is a great privilege.

What is wrong with some people? The changes to Whitburn Street have been a real boost, you no longer take your life in your hands as a pedestrian since the improvements. We visit Bridgnorth on a regular basis, no we’re not residents but we appreciate the beautiful town and the friendly locals – it has far more going for it than Shrewsbury town centre and it’s much cheaper to park and they have a great market to boot !! Stop kocking Bridgnorth and delight in a lovely town
