2011 will be crucial year for Shrewsbury Flax Mill

2011 will be a pivotal year in the future of a £30 million scheme to transform Shrewsbury’s historic Flax Mill into homes, offices and shops, a leading councillor has said.
Long-awaited plans for the site in Ditherington were approved in November, but bosses behind the project still need up to £17 million of public funding to ensure it becomes a reality.
Plans have been in the pipeline for years for the redevelopment of the 18th century Grade I listed mill, although the project has faced uncertainty because of the recession.
Councillor Alan Mosley, Shropshire Council ward member for Castlefields and Ditherington, today said the outcome of a £5 million bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund was crucial for the project’s future.
He said: “Plans for the Flax Mill-Maltings have moved forward as planning permission was granted unanimously for the redevelopment of most of the listed buildings and a major bid has been submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund.
“We will hear whether we have been successful in passing through the first stage scrutiny, in April. If so, the HLF will grant funding for detailed development of a full bid for determination over the next year.
“Obviously funding from the council is very tight but there is every chance that a package can be put together to kick start the whole scheme.”

This Government is quite happy to charge our young folks to go to university because they wish to save money ? and yet, they are prepared along with this Council to spend 30 million on this load of rubble.
Councillor Mosley wants to wake up and live in the real world. We do not want any more shops offices or apartments in Shrewsbury. We have far more than we can fill now.
