Fresh hopes for Bridgnorth Novelis’ workers
Friday 24th December 2010, 10:01AM GMT.
Fresh hopes were today raised for hundreds of workers under threat of losing their jobs at a Shropshire factory after it emerged a third potential buyer has stepped forward.
And union officials said one of the potential buyers for Novelis had expressed an interest in purchasing the whole of the Bridgnorth site.
It comes as workers and union officials reacted angrily today to the timing of an announcement about job cuts at Doncasters Aerospace Components in Shrewsbury – just days before Christmas.
Mick Tuff, regional officer for Unite, said the timing of the announcement for the Whitchurch Road site that it is considering up to 42 job cuts was “sickening”.
But bosses at the firm said they had no choice.
Novelis, an aluminium foil and packaging plant in Stourbridge Road, Bridgnorth, is due to close at the end of April with the loss of up to 319 jobs.
Earlier this week Unite said it was optimistic more than 100 jobs could be saved after two prospective buyers looked at part of the operation — the printed confectionary packaging business.
Caroline Crolley, the union’s Black Country regional industrial officer, today said: “There are now three potential buyers. Another one came on the scene on Tuesday. They are serious potential buyers.”
She said one of them was interested in buying the whole site, if that was an option.
“They have all indicated that they are looking at remaining in Bridgnorth, even if it is only part of the site.”
