Banned Telford driver jailed over police car chase

A 57-year-old Shropshire man has been jailed for 12 months after leading police on a high speed car chase through a built up area of Telford.

Colin Bowen, of Ironbridge Road, Broseley, was sentenced yesterday at Shrewsbury Crown Court after being found guilty of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failing to provide a specimen and a breach of bail.

He was jailed for six months for dangerous driving, four months for driving while disqualified and two months for failing to provide a specimen, all to run consecutively.

Bowen also received a two-month sentence to run concurrently for breaching bail after being caught driving in another incident on July 21 while serving a ban for failing to provide a specimen days earlier.

Police saw Bowen’s parked car was untaxed and he drove off with officers following him.

Mr Phillip Beardwell, prosecuting, said Bowen was overtaking vehicles and jumping a red light at speeds up to 60mph. When he stopped in Ironbridge, officers smashed a window and dragged him from the car.

Mr Paul Smith, for Bowen, said: “Mr Bowen had a breakdown in his marriage. It happened some time ago but it has come to dominate his life.”
