Shropshire Council agrees £9.6m savings

Shropshire Council leaders have agreed £9.6 million worth of budget savings which will see public toilets owned by the authority closed across the county and the cost of school meals rise.

The latest raft of savings, which include a rise of 10p per school meal, were agreed by the council cabinet yesterday.

The £9.6 million savings will allow the council to hit its savings target of about £20 million for 2011/12 needed to offset cuts in Government funding.

In total the authority is looking to save at least £76 million over a four-year period.

The cabinet also backed a proposal from council leader Keith Barrow to put an extra £1 million a year into the severe weather fund. More spending cuts will be discussed over the next couple of months.

The council will also need to find an estimated £20.17 million savings in 2012/13 followed by £17.8 million in 2013/14 and an estimated £9.2 million in 2014/15.

Councillor Barrow has repeatedly said that the council was looking at “doing things differently” wherever it could, so that it could continue to provide those services which were most valued by local people.
