Shropshire ‘professional’ crook wins sentence cut
Wednesday 22nd December 2010, 10:16AM GMT.
A “professional” crook found with hundreds of pounds worth of jewellery stolen from a Shropshire house has had his sentence cut by top judges in London.
Robert Leslie Jamieson, 42, of Mardol, Shrewsbury, was jailed for two years at Shrewsbury Crown Court in September after he admitted handling stolen goods.
But three senior judges at London’s Court of Appeal yesterday ruled that the jail term was “manifestly excessive” and cut it to 16 months.
Lord Justice Thomas told the court Shirley Jones, from Shrewsbury, reported more than £300 worth of jewellery stolen from her home in May.
Police raided Jamieson’s house a few days later and found the items, which the judge said had great “sentimental value” to Mrs Jones.
The judge described Jamieson, formerly of Montrose Place, Bicton Heath, as a “professional” criminal, who had been committing offences since he was 12 years old.
Lawyers for Jamieson said he had tried to sell on the stolen items to fund a drugs habit.
They claimed his jail term was too long considering the goods’ relatively low value.
Lord Justice Thomas, sitting with Mr Justice Treacy and Mrs Justice Sharp, allowed the appeal and reduced the sentence.
