Tributes to former Shropshire Star photographer Eddie Salter

A former Shropshire press photographer has died at the age of 87.

Edgar Salter, known as Eddie, died from pneumonia on Thursday.

Today his family paid tribute to a “lovely man”.

Mr Salter was chief photographer for the Shrewsbury Chronicle & Shropshire Journal and later the Shropshire Star. He was employed from 1957 to 1987, when he retired.

He continued to work part-time for the Shropshire Star for another four years.

As well as photography he played bowls and was a member of Severnside Bowling Club for 22 years.

His daughter Sue Green said he put 30 years of love and hard work into the newspaper industry.

Mr Salter joined the RAF just before World War II broke out.

It was while in the RAF that he learned photography.

He met his wife Constance Gwendoline at a dance at the Morris Hall in 1948 and they were married in 1949. They had two children, Sue and Roy, and three grandchildren, Jessica, Abigail and Lucy.

Roy Salter said: “In 1965 he was at the Chelsea v Shrewsbury match at Stamford Bridge. The fans cheered his name when he walked around the pitch.”

Mrs Green said: “He photographed the Queen, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Cilla Black when they came to Shrewsbury.”

The funeral will be at Shrewsbury crematorium on December 29 at 2.40pm.

A collection will be held for the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

RIP Eddie, a legendary local photographer. I hope that Shropshirestar.com will publish an online album of his best images (and I don’t mean five or ten, let’s have hundreds!) or maybe even a book.
