Shrewsbury road to close for rail bridge repairs

A main route into Shrewsbury town centre will be closed for four nights in the New Year for repairs to a railway bridge which was damaged by a vehicle.

Cross Street in Shrewsbury will be closed from midnight until 6am from January 10 to January 13.

The closure notice has been requested by Centurian Site Services for repairs to the bridge which spans the road.

A spokesman for the firm said the work would be carried out by a sub-contractor for Network Rail.

He said: “We were looking at ways of doing it without disrupting the flow of traffic but unfortunately a road closure is necessary.

“The bash plates on the right hand side of the bridge need to be removed due to a vehicle collision. The brickwork directly behind the plates is going to be removed and replaced with new plates.”

Simon Alton, spokesman for Shropshire Council, said: “The road is closed from midnight to 6am from Monday, January 10 to Thursday, January 13. There will be a diversion up Coton Hill to Whitchurch Road and back down into the town centre.”

A spokeswoman from Network Rail said: “We are carrying out repairs to a strut on the bridge. They are minor repairs following damage to the structure.”
