Commuters in Shropshire faced rush-hour chaos last night when heavy snowfall brought main routes to a standstill. Telford town centre was gridlocked as commuters attempted to make their way home in the Arctic conditions, with motorists reduced to a 20mph crawl along the M54.

But residents in the town who haven’t had their recycled rubbish collected for a month will finally see the bin man today.

People in Ketley and Oakengates have twice had collections cancelled due to snow but Telford & Wrekin Council is putting on a service to reach the hardest-hit residents, with tractors and trailers being sent out to collect the rubbish.

In Shropshire more light snow flurries were forecast today with heavy snow predicted for overnight.

The mercury sank to -4.3C (24F) overnight at RAF Shawbury where the Met Office has a weather station.

Near Shrewsbury three people were treated for the effects of cold water after jumping into a river to try to save a dog.

Fire and ambulance crews were called to Mytton Mill, Montford Bridge, to reports of several people entering the River Perry just before 1.30pm yesterday. John Hawker, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said no-one required hospital treatment. Mike Price, watch manager for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, said three people had entered the water to rescue a Staffordshire bull terrier and the dog appeared to be fine.

In south Shropshire two planning meetings, one for a new Tesco superstore in Tenbury Wells and another for five luxury homes on land off King Street in Ludlow, have been called off.

The recycling in Herongate, Shrewsbury Has not been collected for a Month either, because the council say it’s ‘too slippy for the binmen to walk on’.
Can you believe this when we see kids running on it, no problem….

Why don’t you pay the kids to get rid of your rubbish then?

Perhaps you could get your Ski’s on and pop up to the recycling centre and drop off your own rubbish??

It’s easy to moan when you have no responsibility for actually doing anything….

Bet you haven’t bothered to check on your elderely neighbours?

Too many people in this country want someone else to run their lives for them.

we haven’t had our recycling collected this week
wow big deal i would rather have the recycling build up in it containers in the garden then some poor binman to fall and break bones
its the same with the postmen and women
yeah OK maybe Christmas cards and letters arrive after Xmas no big deal

i can not also believe just how many people were complaining because they stopped the buses and taxis running on Saturday
i wouldn’t expect some poor driver to risk his or her life just so i could go shopping
what would the ones what was complaining have to say if they did continue running and was involved in a crash i suspect they then would be moaning that they shouldn’t have been in service and then start a big compensation claim.

Problem solved in Shrewsbury now… everyone is putting the recycling in the main rubbish bin, no one says you can’t do it. At the end of the day we all pay good money towards council tax, so if they cannot be bothered to work becaus it’s either too slippy or too cold then fine, but don’t blame people for complaining. Everyone elses manages to do their jobs so whay can’t they.
        Lazy or just mis-managed?

        • angie

so as long as you get your rubbish collected you dont give a damm about anyone else
yes i am still able to get into work but i still think about other people not just myself
i dont think they are either lazy or mis-managed i think they are being praticle
i would imagine you would be the first to complain if the dust cart slid out of control into your car

i was brought up to think of others and to treat people with the respect i would like to recieve and at end of the day their safety is far more important to me than having mail or milk delivered or rubbish collected

I live six miles outside Shrewsbury, on the Welsh Border side, my recycling has just been collected.

Services are being maintained in difficult conditions.

Moaning is a state of mind, regardless of the facts.

Well we all pay our council tax Darren.

So, what would happen if the bin wagon went down your road to collect your bin in these conditions and slid into your car or your house?

Please enlighten me as to where the money would come from from your inevitable claim against the council?

Yes you guessed… our council tax, right into your pocket!!!

          Brilliant!!

Darren is right though, if they can collect it in Wales where it is much worse, why not in Shrewsbury on a residential street.

i freely admit that i was nearly in tears last night as i tried to make my way home.
i left work in lichfield and it took me 45 mins going at a steady pace on the old roads.
took the M54 to tesco round about then from there into wellington it took another 45mins to go less than two miles.
it wasn’t the conditions it was the drivers that can’t drive with this weather!!!!

    • Pete

The person in the front knows their capabilities in such weather a lot more than you do. It doesn’t mean that they can’t drive in this weather it means they are taking personal care as they are entitled to. Or would you have prefered them to have put their foot down and crashed?

Just have a thought for anyone other than yourself please.

Oh you poor thing, did it take you a couple of hours to get home?

Black Ice is not visible, so the only way to drive is with extreme caution.

Why are drivers like you in such a hurry?

Have you ever seen a car crash involving Children??

Slow down stay safe – Kids want presents not DEAD parents!

        and to Pete,

no i was not rushing the steady pace i mentioned was around the 40 mark all the way from lichfield. the frustration was when the traffic was not moving cos people blocked the road and round about. a number of people ignored red lights thereby blocking the road again.

pete if these people had put their foot down in perfect weather i think they would have crashed.

You obviously don’t have a dog. I know it’s stupid, but I would probably do the same. Don’t bother with lectures about being irresponsible and cost of my rescue etc. If you love your dog you would try to get her out of trouble if she got stuck in a river!

      Reckless – maybe.

      Unselfish – certainly!

Your “LOL” suggests you think it was funny – perhaps that shows the difference between people like them and you – I know which I prefer.

so what if we dont have our bins collected for a month or even the post arriving? come on we should be protecting the lifes of others rather then them risking there lifes just to deliver a letter or collect some rubish

we should all be comming together within the comunity and taking care of the elderly and the young … making sure the elderly have warm houses and that they have food

and taking care of the young like telling them to be safe out in the snow

so come on shropshire pull together and lets all help one another!

Private companies seem to be able to carry on regardless of the snow and ice. As is proved by my new phone being delivered this morning less than 24 hours after ordering (Thanks DPD :-) Bin men risking their lives in snow, don’t make me laugh.

I’m a local delivery driver for a take away shop in dawley and baring in mind the weather that we had on Saturday I was still out there working delivering peoples food I felt like more than a delivery driver that night due to some people not being able to leave there homes as they did not want to drive and could not catch a bus or taxi and I’m more than happy to do the same again as I am tonight look back to the 70′s and 80′s and how the snow used to be and yet we now get 8″ of snow and it’s the end of the world as we know it people in Russia and Canada must be laughing at us brits and who can blame them we all just need to grit our teeth and get on with it – it’s only going to happen again next year :-P

Good on you Andy, it’s a shame more people don’t have your attitude and spirit. Some people have to rely on deliveries for groceries etc. They can’t physically get to the shops.

    The Xmas Elf!

Shut up whining. Black Ice? What black ice? Yet to find a road frozen enough to warrant black ice as they are actually all slushy not icy.

And as for rubbish, leave it out, so what if blows all over the road, just leave it

And well done paper delivery kids for being to walk where others fear to tread!

    And Merry Christmas to everyone!

Back in the late 1960s I used to help my older siblings who were uni students with the Xmas post. There were at least two deliveries a day close to Xmas and the snow and ice did not bother us all being young. We used to use a wide variety of things to help our boots/shoes grip, sandpaper stuck on the sole was one.
I remember the snow being quite thick and taking short cuts across one garden to another whenever possible.

So we found out yesterday that Telford & Wrekin are so low on grit \ road salt supplies they have drastically cut back where they are spreading it. From a council that was already one of the worst I have come across for keeping roads safe, this is quite worrying. They have the begging bowl out for some of Central Governments emergency reserve I hear.
This week I have travelled around 1000 miles, from Oxfordshire in 6 inches of snow, to Merseyside in -10 degrees and across to Yorkshire. The one place where even main roads are ice rinks and dangerous – Telford.

Obviously the Council are not concerned with health & safety if they cannot make walkways safe for their own employees never mind the general public. The pavements in the county are a disgrace, and the council are obliged to make them safe!! Clubbers and pub goers are walking on the roads because they cannot stay upright on the pavements causing motorists to swerve or take dangerous wide berths. Mind you some of them should wear
appropriate footwear! Back to the Council – they are no worse than the majority of Councils who seem to think that pavements are not on their agenda. They do have a local representative folks – so get on the phone.
