Teen beauty spot drinkers are ramblers, not rebels
- Dave Burrows
A Shropshire couple had no choice but to get married in their wellies after battling through the snow in a bid to make the ceremony on time.
One guest at the wedding of Stuart and Helen Williams even drove an armoured car to reach the Telford chapel on Saturday, while another guest walked for four miles through the snow.
Mr Williams, 48, and his bride, 41, said there was a tense wait on the morning of the wedding to see how many guests would turn up to Marsh Green Methodist Chapel, near Longdon upon Tern.
“We had guests coming from all over the country and one walked four miles to a main road and got a taxi for about 120 miles, it must have cost him hundreds,” said Mr Williams.
“Then he asked the taxi driver to wait until the 40-minute ceremony was over so he could take him home again.
“I had to drive to the chapel four times to try and clear the road a bit. There was eight inches of snow outside the chapel and we got married in our wellies.
“We started getting phone calls in the morning from people who said they didn’t think they could make it and Helen was getting a little worried.
“But in the end we had about 80 per cent of our guests.”
The pair, from Apley in Telford, were only the second couple to get married in the chapel in its 165-year-history.
Mr Williams added: “One of my friends used his armoured car to get through and drove it from Hereford.”
The couple were joined in their wellies by Mr Williams’s children Sam and Niamh and Mrs Williams’s daughter Caitlin, who was a bridesmaid.
Meanwhile singers also braved the harsh weather and gathered in Ludlow town centre on Saturday to sing carols to passers.
