Telford council cuts top jobs to save £1.75m
Monday 20th December 2010, 1:28PM GMT.
The number of senior managers at Telford & Wrekin Council has been slashed in a bid to save almost £2 million, it was revealed today.
Chiefs at the borough council need to save about £25 million in the next four years and have cut the number of senior managers, whose average salary is about £125,000, from 28 to 14.
The chop will see the council save £1.75 million a year.
The council had said that up to 530 of the council’s 6,000 jobs, which include school staff, could be at risk as it attempts to claw back cash over the next 16 months.
Council chief executive Victor Brownlees said the authority had already taken steps to make savings which had put it in a better position than many other local authorities.
He said the aim was to reduce the number of forced redundancies through natural staff turnover, reductions in hours, redeployment of staff and limiting temporary agency work. He added there would also be severe restrictions on recruitment.
The process is expected to contribute up to £14 million of savings by 2013.
Mr Brownlees said: “I recognise that this is a very unsettling time for council staff and I’ve made clear my commitment to supporting them through this. But times are incredibly tough.
“We will do what we can to keep compulsory redundancies to the minimum and will be consulting with our employees and trade unions throughout this process.
“Our overriding commitment is to the people of this borough and we will continue to provide the public services that our communities rely upon.”

if these people can be axed now , why were they in the job in the first place , most of the local government positions are self created , there must be an alternative system to select who gets what position ?

Cut it by at least another 50% because we won’t notice the difference.

The Chief Exec is still on £150,000, which is more than the PM is paid.
