Telford driver drove dangerously in bid to escape police
Friday 17th December 2010, 10:00PM GMT.
A teenager who tried to escape from police by driving dangerously through streets in Telford has been given a suspended sentence.
Ryan Davies had had a promising career in motor sport ahead of him having already won a race, Shrewsbury Crown Court was told, yesterday.
But he was disqualified from driving for two years and told he must sit an extended test before regaining his licence.
He was sentenced to six months in a young offenders institute, suspended for 18 months, given an 18 month supervision order and told to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work.
Judge Robert David Trevor-Jones also ordered that Davies pay £600 towards court costs and forfeit his car.
He had admitted a charge of dangerous driving at a earlier hearing.
Mr Kevin Jones, prosecuting, said police tried to stop Davies in April after noticing he had no seatbelt on.
But he accelerated away and drove too fast and erratically on residential roads in St Georges.
But Mr Paul Smith, for Davies, said Davies accepted that his driving was in a speed and manner that was dangerous.
He said Davies knew nothing could excuse his driving that day.

Not a comment on the article subject itself but a query as to why the Star and many other news media use a judge’s gavel to illustrate a law and order article? No British court uses a gavel, but I think they have entered popular myth through US TV drama.
