Shirehall likely to approve new parking fees
Friday 17th December 2010, 6:30PM GMT.
Shirehall leaders are next week expected to approve a controversial new parking strategy which has come under fire from civic leaders and businesses across the county.
Under a wide range of proposals from Shropshire Council, fees will be introduced in some towns for the first time but in some locations a limited number of free spaces will be provided for motorists.
Fees will be reduced in Bridgnorth on Saturdays in a bid to make it more competitive with neighbouring towns, while in Shrewsbury motorists will be able to park for free from 6pm instead of 8pm to boost the night-time economy.
The strategy has been the subject of a 12-week consultation.
Martin Taylor-Smith, cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, said: “Through extensive consultation we have shaped this strategy to reflect the views of local people and businesses.
“This strategy will work to make parking fairer for all. This is vitally important as the revenue we generate from parking charges is ploughed back into general service provision countywide.
“A well-considered parking strategy will also help us to manage spaces more effectively providing a much needed boost to the local economy.”
The proposed introduction of parking charges in some towns had brought an angry response.
In Ellesmere residents have claimed it will become a “ghost town”. And only last month Wem Town Council accused the Shirehall of riding roughshod over its concerns for the town’s fragile economy.
Further consideration is being given to how the strategy can be enforced cost effectively and this might include the use of CCTV.
The report adds that some of the car parks where new charges are recommended will require improvements, including signing, bay markings and pay and display machines. Charges are expected to come into force in April.

I totally agree with this and presume that staggered parking charges will be introduced at Shirehall for all staff, officers and councillors, without exception.
Let’s face it if we have to pay parking to get treated by our own health service then it seems only fair that the imposers of parking fees should also help fill in the gap in funding.
May I be the first to congratulate the council leader for taking this idea forward and purchasing a tier 1(1) parking permit.
