Talks call as £25m cutbacks hit Telford & Wrekin
Thursday 16th December 2010, 3:05PM GMT.
Labour chiefs in Telford & Wrekin today called for crisis talks with finance bosses after the authority was hit by “the biggest cuts for many generations”.
Group leader Keith Austin said he wanted to start the fight to protect jobs and frontline services as soon as possible.
And Telford Labour MP David Wright hit out at the Coalition Government over the speed and depth of the cuts which he claimed were far quicker and deeper than the previous Government had envisaged.
About £25 million is to be slashed from Telford & Wrekin Council’s budget over the next four years, £12 million of which will fall next year.
Mr Austin said he had called for an urgent meeting with finance officers at the Tory-led council to look at the impact on services and job losses at the authority.
He said the heaviest cuts would fall in the first year and added: “Inevitably, this will mean devastating cuts to frontline services, with less support for vulnerable young people and many families losing support for their elderly parents.
“What I find difficult to swallow is that at a time when this council is having to make these cuts and making local council staff redundant, this Tory administration is still going full steam ahead with the building of lavish civic offices costing tens of millions in the town centre.”

Why dont the sell the Civic offices to Asda as planned, then have front line service offices in Dawley, Wellington and Newport, with back office work being carried out in Stafford Park for example. This would save the council millions. Why should a prime spot be taken up by the council when a private company could spend money to lease the prime site from the council?
Cllr Eade and Kelly with the Chief Exec (who earns £150,000!!!! per year) needs to rethink this.
