Police warn Shropshire festive revellers on safety
Thursday 16th December 2010, 11:29AM GMT.
Revellers in Shropshire were today warned to stay safe during the festive season by West Mercia Police chiefs.
The force’s Operation Christmas Presence campaign warns party goers to plan transport before a night out, not to drink too much or to drink drive, and to always walk away from trouble.
Police said people should not leave their drinks unattended, to avoid them being spiked, and should always stay with friends.
People returning home should not walk alone but should stick to main roads and avoid shortcuts and unlit areas.
Officers will be out breath-testing drivers across West Mercia, including during the morning when people may still be over the limit from the night before.
Chief Inspector Sue Thomas, who is co-ordinating this year’s operation, said: “We want everyone in West Mercia to have a safe and fun festive time during the party season.
“Alcohol can make people vulnerable and they may lose their inhibitions or become more aggressive than usual.
“Police officers will be carrying out high visibility patrols during busy nights in town centres over the Christmas period.”
West Mercia Police has created Bluetooth alerts and adverts for Facebook urging people not to get themselves into any situations they might later regret during nights out.
People are reminded they are only insured if they phone and book a private hire vehicle or if the taxi is a licensed hackney carriage.
