Thousands expected at Shrewsbury carols event tonight

People will get into the festive spirit early by singing their favourite Christmas songs at Carols in The Square in Shrewsbury tonight.

The event, which attracts thousands of people every year, is being jointly hosted by Shrewsbury Town Council and Shropshire Council.

Shropshire councillor Steve Charmley said: “This has always been a special event in Shrewsbury’s calendar and we plan to start the Christmas season in style.”

Fellow councillor Dr Maxwell Winchester, who represents The Quarry and Coton Hill wards, added: “This is a very popular festive event in a beautiful setting, so please come and join in the festivities.”

The night will start at 5.30pm and at 6pm Eric Smith, from BBC Radio Shropshire, will be broadcasting live from The Square.

Helen Ball, Shrewsbury Town Council clerk, said: “Responsibility for the Christmas carols event always used to lie with the former borough council so we are delighted to be re-establishing a local link to this enormously popular event.”

Destination Shrewsbury is also backing the event.
