Fears for Welsh health provision under RSH plans

Mid Wales could become a black hole for health if services are moved away from the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, it has been claimed.

Wyn Williams, the Liberal Democrat Welsh Assembly candidate for Montgomeryshire, said people across the county relied heavily on the “critical services provided at the RSH”.

Mr Williams said he had now written to the Welsh Assembly expressing his serious concerns about the future for health services in Montgomeryshire and Mid Wales.

He said: “I am deeply worried that Mid Wales could become a black hole for health because currently no-one is looking at the overall strategy in Mid Wales and the borders.

“I am astonished at the lack of joined up thinking about health provision for the people of Mid Wales who rely on critical services outside of the county.

“The Welsh government has made no effort to contact the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital to gain a full understanding of the implications of the proposed changes to hospital services for patients in Montgomeryshire and Mid Wales.

“I am asking the Welsh government to call an urgent meeting of all key stakeholders, to consider the implications of changes to services at the Royal Shrewsbury, Telford, Bronglais, Wrexham and Glan Clwyd Hospitals.”

Shouldn’t they be using their own hospitals?

I am delighted that the Assembly Member is raising concerns…..

Perhaps they could explain why under ‘Designed for Life’ (the healthcare plan for Wales – looking at Welsh solutions for Welsh problems) not a penny of the £550 million a year capital spend is in Shropshire?

Is it not hypocritical to have a plan that ignores Shropshire when looking at Welsh needs – yet to expect Welsh needs to drive Shropshire planning when it suits?

I sure everyone in Telford would like everything at Telford, everyone in Shrewsbury would like everything in Shrewsbury, and everyone in Powys would like everything (given a free hand and infinite money) in Welshpool or Newtown, but we know that safety, quality and money all dictate that that simply isn’t possible

Given the reality of needing to split work across two hospitals – which services would the Member prefer to see based in Telford and which is in Shrewsbury?….or is it more important to pretend to the voters that they can have everything than to engage in a constructive debate?
