West Mercia Police facing 11.8 per cent budget cut
Tuesday 14th December 2010, 8:00PM GMT.
West Mercia Police is to have its “core” government funding slashed by a total of 11.8 per cent over the next two years, it has been announced in a move described as “challenging”.
Every police authority will see a 5.1 per cent fall in its principal cash injections from the Home Office and Department for Communities and Local Government in 2011/12, with a further 6.7 per cent cut in 2012/13.
Total funding, including the Neighbourhood Police Fund, means West Mercia Police Authority will receive £131.6m in 2011/12, falling to £123m in 2012/13, under the new grant allocations.
Policing Minister Nick Herbert said the reductions would be “challenging”.
But he insisted police forces should be able to find savings while protecting front line services.
West Mercia was today digesting the figures.
The detailed new settlement for forces in England and Wales follows the comprehensive spending review in October.
When taking into account monies for all specific grants, police forces in England and Wales face a nine per cent cut in Government funding over the next two years.
Central government funding in total for police will fall by four per cent to £9.3 billion in 2011/12, with a further five per cent cut to £8.8bn in 2012/13.
It is not possible to compare the allocations with previous spending levels because of coalition changes to the funding formula.
Forces will be given greater freedom to decide how to allocate the cash, with specific funds for crime fighting and the basic command unit being absorbed into the main police grant.
