Shrewsbury businesses given arson alerts
Tuesday 14th December 2010, 8:00PM GMT.
Arson alerts are being issued to businesses in Shrewsbury following a fire which engulfed a Shrewsbury furniture store, officials said today.
Bosses at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are distributing cards containing advice to managers of town firms amid fears there could be arson attacks over the festive period.
It comes after a suspected arson attack at a rear doorway of the Multiyork furniture store in Windsor Place on October 11. The fire, which happened at about 1.30am, broke out in a wheelie bin.
Ten people were led to safety from flats above the store, and bosses of the shop said about 80 per cent of the stock had been destroyed or badly damaged.
Paul Fulgoni, watch manager for Shrewsbury Fire Station, today said officers were visiting business premises.
He said: “By taking a few simple steps businesses can help take away the temptation for those who engage in this type of crime.”
The advice includes securing all property, putting out rubbish for collection as late as possible and not leaving it overnight, and storing flammable materials in an appropriate container and locked away.
Business owners are also encouraged to make their buildings more secure.
