Dyfed-Powys Police to axe 350 jobs in £7m budget cut
Tuesday 14th December 2010, 12:51PM GMT.
DYFED-POWYS Police today confirmed up to 350 jobs will be lost after its budget over the next two years was slashed by more than £7 million.
It comes as town hall chiefs in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin are counting the cost of massive budget reductions which are set to leave them millions of pounds out of pocket.
The Dyfed-Powys force’s police authority has already shed 70 posts and warned between 250 and 350 further jobs are now set to go – including a “significant reduction” in bobbies on the beat.
Delyth Humfryes, chairman of the Dyfed-Powys Police Authority, said today the 11.5 per cent reduction in budget would change policing in the region for the future.
He said: “Today’s provisional budget settlement will mean that DPPA faces cash reductions of £7.012 million or 11.5 per cent in revenue over the next two years.”
He added: “This has a massive implication for Dyfed-Powys Police for the future and this decision does not acknowledge the additional pressures involved in policing a large rural area.
“Taken together the cuts are likely to result in job losses of between 250 and 350 and this scale of budget reduction cannot be delivered without a significant reduction in the number of police officers employed.”
Powys County Council will receive £2 million less funding than last year.
