Woman dies after being hit by a train near Machynlleth

A 53-year-old woman has died after being hit by a train at the level crossing in Derwenlas, near Machynlleth. An investigation has now been launched.

British Transport Police (BTP) are investigating the circumstances around the accident which resulted in the woman’s death at about 11.20pm on Friday.

The train involved was the 10.12pm service from Barmouth to Machynlleth.

British Transport Police said the death was currently being treated as unexplained.

The woman who died has not yet been named by police.

Police, paramedics and Mid & West Wales Fire and Rescue Service personnel attended the scene of the incident on Friday.

A BTP spokesperson said: “BTP officers were advised by Network Rail of an incident on the line at an occupational crossing in the Derwenlas area, near Machynlleth, on December 10 after a report that a person had been struck and killed by a train.

“Officers from BTP and Dyfed Powys Police attended the incident, which was reported to police at 11.20pm and is currently being treated as unexplained.”

Inspector Jonathan Tatton, of Dyfed Powys Police, added: “Dyfed Powys Police can confirm that an incident occurred on the train tracks at Derwenlas, near Machynlleth, where a 53-year-old female lost her life.

“This incident is now being investigated by BTP.”

Network Rail said some services suffered minimal disruption.

But services were up and working as normal again by Saturday morning.
