Tree hug protest in Oswestry
Monday 13th December 2010, 12:49PM GMT.
Peaceful protestors turned tree huggers in Oswestry at the weekend, campaigning against plans to cut down the town centre’s cherry trees.
From children to senior citizens, people turned up at Festival Square on Saturday to show Shropshire County Council that they were not happy with it’s decision to chop down the nine trees.
Country council officials recently decided the trees near a town car park had to go because they believed roots were making pavements uneven and causing a potential tripping hazard.
But Jools Payne, from The Jools Payne Partnership, joined forces with other businesses she launched the Save the Red Square Trees campaign.
Mrs Payne said: “The tree hugging was really good fun. We had lots of people all hugging trees. There were supporters of all ages, men, women, children and young people.
“We hope our peaceful protest will have got the message across to the council.”
The campaign group has also collected about 150 signatures on a petition. Members also set up a Facebook page and had T-shirts made.
Last week the statue standing in Festival Square was seen wearing one of the T-shirts.
A spokesperson for Shropshire Council said a date to cut down the trees had not yet been set.
