A fresh arctic blast will bring more snow and bitterly cold temperatures to the UK this week, with forecasters warning Shropshire could find itself in the frontline for the wintry weather.

With many areas only just getting over the snowstorms earlier this month, another band of snow is set to sweep down across the country.

Ambulance officials said the cold snap has put the service under added strain with crews across Shropshire and the West Midlands dealing with more than 5,600 emergency calls over the weekend.

It comes as Shropshire firefighters warned people not to risk their lives after a group was seen playing on a frozen pool.

Fire officials said ice on rivers, pools and ponds was thin and could easily break, with people who fall in risking hypothermia setting in within minutes or death.

The Met Office has issued a warning for widespread icy roads and heavy snow across Shropshire and the West Midlands on Thursday and Friday.

Andy Ratcliffe, a forecaster at MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: “On Thursday a cold front will move south across the UK.

“This will give rain initially, but it will turn to snow on its back edge.”

On Thursday in the West Midlands there will be an increasing risk of both ice and snow as very cold air spreads southwards.
