Tributes to former Wolves chairman Dick Homden
Saturday 11th December 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
A leading Shrewsbury businessman today paid tribute to fellow town entrepreneur and former Wolves FC chairman Dick Homden, claiming he had been a “massive inspiration” to him.
Mr Homden, who served as Wolves chairman from 1986 to 1988, passed away at his home at Falkland Manor, Dorrington, near Shrewsbury, last Thursday, following a battle with cancer.
He is well respected in sporting circles for his work with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC and Shrewsbury Amateur Boxing Club, but is also renowned for his success in business. Tony
Bywater, chairman of Salop Leisure at Emstrey, today said Mr Homden was highly respected by many people at Shrewsbury Business Chamber and said many people would be attending his funeral next Wednesday.
He said he had known Mr Homden for about 30 years and said he was a big employer in Shrewsbury after launching his firms Salop Design & Engineering Ltd, in Harlescott, Salop Haulage and Homden Holdings. Mr Bywater said: “He was a very good friend of mine and I had known him for many years and I remember when he started Salop Design with a very large and modern new factory employing hundreds of people.
“I remember the first time I saw it and it was like a five star hotel it was a superb building.
“He was a massive inspiration to many people, myself included.”
Mr Bywater said that despite his wealth Mr Homden was a “humble” man who had time for everyone.
