Stamp honours Shrewsbury’s naval hero

A Shropshire naval war hero has been honoured across the pond with a special legal commemorative postage stamp.

The Government of Canada’s Postal Service, Canada Post, has made available a stamp of Admiral Benbow that can be used in the country.

It comes after plans were announced to remember the seafarer with a special statue in his home town of Shrewsbury.

Rob Benbow, of Victoria, Canada, who is a direct descendant of the Admiral, said he was delighted that the stamp, printed by The Canadian Bank Note Company Limited, had been launched.

He has previously branded the lack of public knowledge of one of Shrewsbury’s famous sons as “unacceptable” and “astonishing”. Mr Benbow was also the co-ordinator for the Admiral Benbow Campaign for an Exhibition and Statue in Shrewsbury on social networking site Facebook.

Campaigners want to see a permanent memorial to Benbow in Shrewsbury and have been told by the town council that a place will be found for one — if they can fund it.

Admiral John Benbow (1653-1702) was an English officer in the Royal Navy.

He saw action against Algerian pirates before joining the merchant navy where he traded until the Glorious Revolution of 1688, when he returned to the Royal Navy and was commissioned.

He died at Port Royal, Kingston, Jamaica, on November 4, 1702.
