School head to retire after 22 years
Saturday 11th December 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
A Shropshire headteacher is retiring after working for 22 years at the same school.
Penny Cooper, of William Brookes School in Much Wenlock, will stand down at Easter.
Governors started to look for a replacement this month, and have four months to find a suitable candidate for the role.
Mrs Cooper said: “Since I took over the headship of William Brookes School in April 1988 there have been many changes and developments which have made my job continually interesting, stimulating, enjoyable and rewarding.
“I have loved every minute of the 22-and-a-half years so far.”
“One of the most important developments has been for me to see through the tremendous challenge of developing and moving into our new 21st century school, including ensuring a period of stability during the transition.
“Now that we are settled into our exciting new learning environment, and knowing that the external works will be completed in the spring of 2011, next April seems to be a good time for me to retire from the post of head.”
William Brookes is a comprehensive secondary school community for students aged between 11 and 18.
It is a specialist Performing Arts and Maths and Computing School, with nearly 1,000 pupils.
A leisure centre and the Edge Arts Centre were added to the school campus in August for the use of the wider community.
