MP’reassured’ after Copthorne Barracks talks
Saturday 11th December 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski today said he felt “reassured” over the future of the town’s closure-threatened barracks following talks with Government officials.
The Tory MP, along with two trade union representatives, met with Andrew Robathan, parliamentary under secretary of state at the Ministry of Defence, this week to discuss Copthorne Barracks.
Mr Kawczynski said he believed ministers understood the importance of maintaining a military presence in the town and said he wanted to safeguard jobs.
He said the meeting followed a discussion he had with defence secretary Dr Liam Fox in October when he agreed to hear representations as to why Shrewsbury should remain a “garrison town”.
It was reported earlier this year the barracks could close as part of Ministry of Defence cuts. The current position remains unchanged as the barracks is undergoing a review along with other MoD sites across the country, according to officials.
Mr Kawczynski said: “I have had a very productive meeting along with two senior trades union delegates and Mr Robathan. We put across to him the importance of Copthorne Barracks not just for Shrewsbury but to the Midlands as a whole and we talked about the facilities at the base.
He added: “It was a very productive meeting and I left feeling far more reassured that they understand the importance of maintaining a military presence in Shrewsbury.”
