Mike Wade's view of Shrewsbury

This stunning panoramic picture of Shrewsbury’s snow-sprinkled skyline was taken from the top floor of Shrewsbury School by a steady-handed maths teacher.

Tutor Mike Wade spent hours composing the staggering image which was created using a combination of 49 different shots.

The festive view of the loop of the River Severn and Quarry Park was taken at the height of the big freeze, which has hit the country over the past two weeks.

The portrait of Shrewsbury paints a peaceful picture of the town, which has suffered sub-zero temperatures.

Mr Wade said he decided to take advantage of the perfect setting of the school during one of his free periods to get a snapshot of the town frozen in time.

He said it was a lengthy process to complete the picture at the school in Kingsland but it was worth the effort with people already asking for copies.

He said: “I actually teach on the other side of the building. But I was taking pictures in the school one day and one of my colleagues told me about the view from the top floor.

“I took the picture in one of my free periods on Tuesday at around 11am. It only took around five minutes to take the 49 shots, but then around five hours to process the image.”

Arctic conditions have begun to loosen their grip on Shropshire and Mid Wales although sub-zero temperatures are expected to return next week.

The big freeze will go down in the record books as bringing the worst December weather in 30 years. Temperatures are set to rise with light rain and a high of 6C (43F) forecast for Saturday. But the mercury is due to plummet on Sunday to -1C (30F) with a minimum on Monday of -4C (25F).

Icy winds are expected to return and bookmakers have slashed the odds of a white Christmas.
