Attacking the royals will only harm the yobs
Friday 10th December 2010, 2:03AM GMT.
It was business as usual for the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall despite an attack by thugs (yes thugs) as they travelled to the Royal Variety Performance, writes Shirley Tart.
The last member of the royal family hijacked while driving through London was Princess Anne in 1974. There was a kidnap attempt when she and her then husband Captain Mark Phillips, were travelling home through the Mall late at night.
Yesterday her brother’s car became the target for student protesters. White paint was thrown, a window smashed, the car kicked and belted by bottles and anything else in sight.
We will be asked to accept that these were either hangers on (some with sinister masks) to the student protest or good hearted young people protecting their future. Rubbish.
You had only to watch news bulletins to know that thousands, not some wayward minority, were up for violence and a wrecking campaign yesterday which had damn all to do with the debate going on at Westminster.
That was an excuse to run wild, attack police, cause wanton damage in our capital city and claim it as legitimate protest.
Charles and Camilla were unharmed but the baying mob outside the car window was absolutely terrifying. And how much more so for ordinary folk making their own way home without royal protection and being very much at risk.
If these out-of-control yobs think this is any way to harness public support, they are wrong.
Even those of us who might have sympathised with the principle at stake and support legitimate protest, can’t remotely tolerate the terrible attacks and dangerous behaviour we saw in London again.
If young people think this is any way to make points or legitimately protest, are they bright enough for a university place anyway? While others who misguidedly thought they were there for an organised, peaceful march, will get tarred with the same brush.
It can only be a matter of time before someone dies in these mindless riots. And then of course it will be anyone else’s fault.
Maybe it was a clanger to take the heir to the throne anywhere near the troubles. But if the royal couple had chickened out and cancelled their evening, they’d have been verbally trashed. Instead it will be back to blaming the police. Who’d be a London bobby?

If the politicians want to calm it, maybe they ought to stand by the promises made to get them into power instead of increasingly arming the police in preparation for battle…
Report abuse
The Tories made no such pledge. This was an election pledge made by the lib dems who knew they could promise what they want because they knew they would never win the election. They are only in government by default. The lib dem election promises died when they failed to win the election, the Tory approach of cutting debt was what the majority of this country voted for. Everyone needs to contribute to solving the problem, students too.
I was referring to almost everything any of them say…
Referendum on the EU? Every single party makes promises every election and whoever gets in then makes excuses for not honoring them.
Time for Guy Fawkes, the sooner the better…

“Everyone needs to contribute to solving the problem, students too”. I’d add fat-cat tax avoiders and big companies who leave it to the rest of us to bail them out.

Did Camilla shout “Let them eat cake” or perhaps it was tart? ;)
It’s good job she was there tohold charles hand in loco parentis for the queen.
BTW the yobs (and I,m sure there were a few of them amongst the students as there were with the miners and the printers protests etc etc) were not baying, that’s what hounds do Shirley.

The eductation system is riddled with marxists. These nasty middle aged ‘trots’ are poisoning the minds of these youngsters. Not only are they brainwashing these kids, some of them are also egging them on to cause trouble.
“The *eductation* system is riddled with marxists.”
I suppose that’s your excuse and you’re sticking to it ;)

Thank you for bring the marxist threat to our attention Helen. What this country needs is a strong leader, who’ll lock up these lefty “intellectuals” in special camps for re-education.
Perhaps he’d take a look at some of the other troublemakers while he’s at it – those trade unionists are getting too big for their boots again….
Rob – For the last few decades, Britain’s schools and colleges have been infested with polititically-correct bigots who sympathize with far left extremists.
The good news is that many of these old trots belong to the ‘baby boomer’ generation and have now reached retirement age.
As for “re-eductation camps”? -We already have them. They’re called state schools.
Helen,
All I can say is that you must have visited some pretty strange schools.
When I look at the education my children are receiving I see that they are gtting a broad and decent education – free from political influence as far as I can see.
They are taught Religious Education for example – they learn about the different beliefs that people have, and the historical reasons behind the different faith groups. They’re not indoctrinated in any way – just educated and left to make their own choices about whether to believe or not.
None have ever been banned from singing ‘Baa baa black sheep’ nor encountered any opposition to celebrating Christmas – that is the stuff of tabloid myth.
They are taught history, both ancient and modern – my children have learnt about topics as diverse as the Ancient Egyptians through to the Second World War. History is a great teacher – you might be astonished, but there are still those who deny that events such as the Holocaust took place – it’s unbelievable that there are still such levels of ignorance, but there it is.
They are taught how to behave towards their fellow human beings, and that it is morally reprehensible to judge people on the colour of their skin, or on the basis of their religious beliefs, or their sexual orientation.
I see no sign of of far-left extremism there – just values of common decency to which all but extremists themselves would happily subscribe.
In the end, education is the enemy of extremists. They play upon irrational fears which are borne out of ignorance – it’s in the extremists’ interests to keep people ignorant.
The pool of ignorance is where they go to find their support, whether they’re religious zealots attempting to recruit young disenchanted hotheads, football hooligans taking to the streets in support of their own twisted and sick version of what represents freedom, or minor political parties who get their kicks from persecuting minorities.

As co-founder (with Timmy Mallett) of WikiWoo, the now infamous leaks site, I am most interested in obtaining details of this Marxist or possibly Trotskyist infiltration of the UK education system and their promotion of civil disobedience as I’m keen to publish it.
I trust that it can be supplied forthwith.
I hope it turns out not to be propaganda being regurgitated to pin the blame on our nations educators as that would be shameful.

What planet are you living on Helen? These students are bravely standing up for their rights, the police and the royals are the ones with the “poisoned minds”.

Thats a shocking excuse. The idiotic mindless “few” were not interested in demonstrating about the uni fee increase, they were their purely to cause trouble and havoc. So not putting on my post means Ms Tart can comment with no right of reply?
A yob is a thuggish working class person.
I seem to remember many of those at the printing union strikes in the past.
[ More than 400 police officers and many members of the public were injured, and more than 1,000 arrests made during the 1986 newspapers dispute]
This makes yesterdays debarcle a child’s tea party in comparison, allbeit with a royal visitor!
There were many infiltrators at the miners strikes too.
Some wore the uniforms of our police force.
That was the very reason that my Brother in Law an inspector at that time, left the force and became a physics teacher.
It is perhaps fortunate for him that he passed away of cancer a few years ago as he also went on to become a Liberal Democrat councillor but would have been horrified at their alliance and subsequent behaviour with the Tory Party.
Unless, of course, he might have realised there was sense in forming a coalition with the conservative party to form a government to look after the interests of the many, not just as self-serving few?
Sorry Eva, but none of the dictionary definitions of yob that I can find make any mention of needing to be ‘working class’ to be one.

And what about the local school that a large banner saying: “Competitiveness is not conducive to comprehensive education”?
Thew problem with these idiots is that if they get a criminal record for assault, etc., when they come to have a CRB check for future employment, they will have a criminal record and so will be unemployable in some sectors.
And will those who encouraged them to take part in riots help them, then? No. They will suddenly be unable to recognise them, next time they see them, homeless, selling the Big Issue…
Report abuse
Eva land.
You really do come out with a load of tripe – and that is putting it mildly. Now tell us the real reason why your brother in law, an Inspector no less, (nothing but the best for you) left the Police Force to become a teacher. He would have earned almost twice as much as a teacher. Tell us how much service he had in then I will tell you what pension rights he had and what he stupidly gave up as a matter of principle and high personal integrity?. I won’t go through word for word what else I would question in your comment as it is to silly to give it time but you are running true to form again.
So you as good as accuse Eva of being a downright liar, but offer no justification – it would appear that she’s not the only one who’s “running true to form again”?
Of course, as an ex-copper it’s probably hard to lose the habit.
You do assume a great deal but when I credit you with knowing what you are talking about and when you can read, as I have put down some justification, then I will engage with you, as it is, you have no idea at all what employment I had and your leanings are all to apparent. It appears that you are just another juvenile anti police blogger and it gives rise to the question, what did they do you for or did you read it from other blogs without the intelligence to come to your own conclusions. As for your job, I wouldn’t hazard a guess here but it would not be very “high level” judging from your comment. I have no wish to indulge in inane nonsence with you, let’s call it a day and wait for Eva land shall we.
Ah, but I can read, and write, something you appear to have problems with.
That should be “too apparent”, and as for my job, let’s say I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t know how to spell simple words such as “nonsense”.
Stuart,
I have a low opinion of the police, but have not been “done” for anything, as you so eloquently put it.
I see corrupt police officers serving, one even with a forgery, (YES FORGERY), conviction. I see police standing by while people drown, thats their public service ethos for you. I see police battering innocent people to death for walking in the wrong place and then not being prosectued, (Ian Tomlinson).
I saw the first attack thrown at the countryside alliance protest by a police officer. I saw the “spun” injury figures for the climate change protest. I see police working without their service numbers displayed so they cannot be identified.
Unfortunately, I dont see police helping people anymore. Only being armed by an increasingly belligerent political class, (and there was me thinking it might get better after Labour were thrown out!), in blatant preparation for the trouble ahead.
Frankly Stuart I don’t give a fig as regards you crediting me with anything.
All I know is that not only have the police ever “done” me with anything (as I have never knowingly committed a criminal act, or been charged or received a summons, or even a caution, that leaves me with a far cleaner criminal record than the average police officer).
My reason for assuming that you are a retired (or God help us, a serving) police officer, is that every time someone mentions the police on here they are told that they are speaking rubbish and should keep quiet unless they have your level of knowledge.
Don’t expect a reply from me until “I credit you with knowing what you are talking about and when you can read”
I won’t hold my breath, but meanwhile, have a great Christmas playing with your Corgi “Z-Cars” set.

Do teachers really earn twice as much as police inspectors..

The window had a crack in it, it was not smashed.
I also seriously doubt that the people responsible were students at all, probably one of the anarchist groups that have decided to join in the protests and cause chaos.
What a surprise to see the puerile Ms Tart branding all students as Yobs. How dare they protest against her oh-so wonderful Royals!
The media reporting of the protests continues to be unbelievably biased against the students. For example the BBC continued to report yesterday evening that a policeman had been knocked of his horse even despite one of their own correspondents at the scene confirming many hours earlier that he had simply fallen off!
At least the students have had the balls to voice their opinions rather than the majority in this country who have just rolled over and accepted completely unnecessary cuts. This Government are using these austerity measures to impose their unacceptable agenda through the back door and the British public is simply too stupid to realise it!
One second this goverment tells us we are bankrupt and must accept their cuts the next they are bailing out the Irish to the tune of Billions – someone’s not telling the truth!
Put simply the actions of those student protestors yesterday pale in comparison with the vandalism of our education system – imposed by an unelected coalition cabinet consisting of 18 millionaires!
I suppose the media faked all the fires, rock throwing, criminal damage, public disorder, graffiti & violence we saw in multiple locations by the many different people.
What sickened me the most is the defiling of the Churchill statue and especially the cenotaph. The cenotaph is a memorial to men who fought & died for a real cause – many younger than the so called adults we saw over the last week.
The student actions have left a bitter taste in the mouth of the public & lost you any support you may have had if the protests had been dignified & restrained. If this rise in fees keeps just one of these mindless thugs out of the system then I fully support it!
Violence is never the answer . These idiots need to learn how to get thier views across with out using violence . I fear for the future of the UK when this is the type of people who may one day be running it . God help us all !
The students are right to feel angry towards this useless, backstabbing ‘ConDem’ government but this violent behaviour cannot be excused.
No doubt these legitimate protests have been hijacked by the violent communists in the SWP,’UAF’,'class war’, etc.
Stuart, so nice to see you are still with us! Dave my bro in law sadly passed away at 54 so didn’t get a chance to receive any pension.
Being as you are so interested in him Stuart, David went to Sandhurst before joining the police and as I said he rose to be an inspector and was utterly disgusted with the way the force was used to suppress the miners. He was a victim of being stabbed in the course of his duty (not at a protest march )which also influenced his decision to become a Physics teacher.
He came from a relatively humble background growing up in Ulverton Cumbria, his father was a veteran of a Japanese POW camp who kept a diary of his terrible experience there.
Dave somtime read part of this diary to the pupils at the school where he worked.
He was a highly principled person which is more than I can say about someone, who from previous posts sounds like and has been accused of being a bully and who makes sly personal comments when he obviously has nothing useful to contribute.
Well, Stuart, I hope you are now ashamed of yourself and your insinuations and will make Eva a sincere apology for your snide remarks about her family..
For your information, Rob is a highly intelligent person and one of the most knowledgeable individuals I have come across (in a fairly long and well-travelled life).
Your attempts to patronise him make you look very silly and very, very small.

The couple should have been taken in a unmarked police car.
Charles was even joking about the protests before they were taken to the performance.
Also Charles was the one who wound down the window to say go away to the attackers.
Naive or what?
I’m sure we can all agree that the small minority of protesters who were violent or destructive are worthy of nothing but contempt, and that attacking the Royals physically is not a good thing.
But neither is the awful subservient fawning over thse people we see from the likes of Shirley Tart. Don’t forget, several of the Roayals have been given access to the very best of our Universities when they had achieved nothing like the level of qualifications ordinary students (or thugs as Shirley prefers to regard them) might need to gain access.
Rob, have you ever heard Count Arthur Strong on Radio Four?
If you have you’ll see the similarity!
I haven’t, but I’ll look it up (that’s if it actually exists – I just hope you’re not running true to form again ;>) again).

There’s very little point debating the article above. On any other non-news website, Shirley Tart would be largely ignored for trolling. He/she only posts these ridiculous inflammatory opinions to stir things up. Don’t feed the troll, people.
Eva land, I will try again, my response to yours above was either censored because I made a comment in response to yours accusing me of “bullying” or, I pressed the wrong key which I don’t think I did. That means we have an extremely pedantic and touchy editor of these comments. It seems it is in order to call me a bully when I merely disagree with you but it is quite another when I jokingly respond – my comments are censored.
You took it on yourself to come out with the left wing tripe against the Police Force without a shred of evidence to support it apart from the allegation that your brother in law resigned from the Police in the rank of Inspector because of his alleged dislike of Police behaviour during the miners strike. The miners strike was in 1984/5, 25 years ago, your brother in law died at the age of 54 after serving as a teacher. It takes many years for an officer to become an Inspector, by that time they have accrued a massive benefit towards a very lucrative pension which he would have lost had he resigned. No officer would be so stupid. I am not going to go deeper into this because I could say much and unless it is censored again, I will merely say this, apart from grounds of retirement or for health reasons or for dismissal (only 3 in this latter case). I am unable to find one single case of an Inspector voluntarily resigning for any other reason immediately after the strike, albeit there were at least 4, possibly 5 who resigned long after the miners strike when it could no longer be interpreted as a reason. You say that he did not go out on pension. Perhaps you will tell me his age on joining, the force he joined, the year and age when he “resigned” and the year he was promoted to Inspector. I say frankly, you either have a vivid imagination when you compile these blogs or don’t know what a “porkie” is.
Now, the other people that deserve a reply.
SPENCER, yes sorry, my bad grammar, read it the other way about, Police Inspectors earn possibly twice or thereabouts as much as a new teacher. I will stand corrected regarding exact figures.
ANDY, yes, I agree with very much with what you say and would strongly disagree with other bits. I am not an apologist for the Police when comments are based on fact and can be substantiated – indeed I am their biggest critic. I will respond and strongly disagree with untrue comments made to support a particular position that to me are glaringly obvious as in this case. I cannot be more specific and dogmatic, irrespective of what anyone say’s, no Inspector of Police resigned from the force because of the behaviour of Police during the miners strike – Period. Any doubters, work out the figures. The average Inspector reaches that rank (there are exceptions)in about 15 years unless he has been on an accelerated promotion course. By this time he would be over half way towards his pension during the time we are talking about – that’s why Inspectors do not resign.
#15 Don’t you suspect that some of these troublemakers are planted, Peter? I believe this was shown to be the case in the 1980s during the journalist and miners strikes, in order to give them bad publicity.
My son said there was a very small protest the other day in Shrewsbury and the police had an armoured vehicle parked outside SSFC!
[Unless, of course, he might have realised there was sense in forming a coalition with the conservative party to form a government to look after the interests of the many, not just as self-serving few?]
Matt how can forming a coalition with the party whose very ethos is to look after the few be common sense?
Matt, did you see Cameron ‘s pal, Philip Green who has overseen some of the cuts, making efficiency savings etc (mainly affecting the less well off) has put his company in his wife’s name as she resides in a tax haven?
Pretty good at looking after himself eh!
Eva, your son seems to have a vivid imagination. Where do you think we live that the local police have ‘armoured’ vans?!
I seem to remember seeing an ordinary police van in the town that day, with a few bobbies in to keep an eye on things I would guess, the same as I have seen with any other protest involving a fair few people.
Certainly the students I saw were allowed to get on with their protest without inteference.
In line with many other right wing commentators Shirley Tart is avoiding the issue of the coalition government trebling tuition fees, despite the Lib Dems campaigning for votes on the basis of the abolition of tuition fees.
‘Ah, but they’re in coalition, they can’t have it all their own way’ I hear the coalition apologists cry. But there’s a huge difference between striking a compromise and enabling a policy which is the very opposite fo that which you camapaigned for.
It is an affront to democracy. The coalition have no mandate for this.
As for Ms Tart’s comment that ‘You had only to watch news bulletins to know that thousands, not some wayward minority, were up for violence and a wrecking campaign yesterday which had damn all to do with the debate going on at Westminster’.
I have seen several reports, including Paul Mason’s reportage on Newsnight in which he covers the protest meeting police lines at Westminster, where he describes the police as losing control and using their batons freely’. The footage can still be seen on the BBC, as can other testimonies of protestors being attacked by police for failing to ‘move back’ when it was a physical impossibility.
It is telling that Ms Tart is outraged by Charles and Camilla being caught up in the protest, but mentions nothing of the student who had to have a three hour opeeration on his brain after being struck by a police baton.
She also claims it was not a ‘minority’ of troublemakers, but gives no numbers of arrests / charges of criminal offences from a crowd of 35,000.
In short, very little fact and a lot of bleating from a Tory supporter and royalist.

This was a comment made about you sometime ago on a post by someone else, not me, though I am inclined to say that I do agree with their comment.
I have posted an obituary that was in the local paper about Dave but am not prepared to give you details of his life just because you have accused me of being a liar.
TRIBUTES have been flooding in for a devoted campaigner and much-loved member of the community, who has died.
About 100 residents paid their last respects to David at Baptist Church, in Street East, on June 9.
David, 54, was the founder member of , who avidly set about re-opening the attraction when the closed its doors for the last time in 2001.
The Street resident regularly attended town council meetings to fight the campaigning group’s corner and was a solid support to both members of the community and colleagues at work.
David (pictured), who was born in Lancashire, was a keen fisherman from a young age and took up membership at the Rifleman’s Arms Angling Club. The loving father-of-two passed away at Community Hospital on June 4 after a battle against colon cancer.
chairman, said: “He was a hard-working and valued member of and will be missed by a lot of people in the community. The funeral service was beautiful, many people attended and it was a celebration of his life.”
David was also active in the Liberal Democrat Party. District and town councillor, (Lib-Dem-Central), said he was deeply saddened at the loss of a man who had been a great help and support to the party.
David’s partner, who met David six years ago, said: “He had a heart which could bear other people’s troubles and would campaign for justice on their behalf. He was a rock which was unmoving and did not worry about the popular view but would fight for what was just.”
She added: “Needless to say there are many who have been shocked and saddened by his death but I know he has left behind the memory of his strength and fortitude which will have inspired those who knew him. He will be greatly missed.”
He died before he had a chance to retire from his teaching post but may well have had a pension from his time in the force. Shame I didn’t question him more closely about his personal financial status, Stuart seeing as it is such a burning issue to you.

I have been surprised that as he has pertained to be a voice for young people with the Princes Trust that he has not spoken out about this selling out of English students.
Is it because he is Prince of Wales?
Is it less important to him than keeping Briain looking like the two world wars never happened and the Victorian Empire is still exhibiting it’s glory architecturally and is still intact?

I did do a response to Eva which, for the second time has been censored which leaves me to think that there is a distinct bias on these streams which allow insults and idiocy one way but when they are answered with intelligent responses, are censored in line with what the “censor” thinks and what his/her own opinions are. In this case they allow lies and gross ignorance of the Police to be propagated on these streams by people – as in your case and eva’s who know not the slightest thing about the Police only what your minds allow you to believe. Now, seeing that your stupid comment above has been allowed/printed and I am not allowed to reply, I will let you into a secret, I am a retired (not to long ago) very Senior Police Officer – and I mean “senior”, I have a 2.1 Ll.b (honours) degree from Aberystwyth Uni., Served for many years in the Overseas Civil Service and yes, for a time, I served in the Metropolitan Force in their old C.1 Central Office at the Yard. I tell you this now because of the censoring of my previous posts and on the basis that I will now throw the baby out with the bathwater, cease my daily delivery of the Star and cease my response to the likes of you and eva.
