Coronation Street stars were at the centre of a security alert today amid reports that the soap’s 50th anniversary live show was being targeted by Al Qaeda.

The largest British TV audience of the year is expected to tune into tonight’s hour-long live special, and police confirmed they had received intelligence suggesting the studio had been marked as a potential terror target.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: “This is a public, high profile event. The risk is consistent with the UK terror threat, which is currently severe.

“ITV have taken on a private security firm, and our officers will assist them.”

Coronation Street’s stars, and production crew, have been told to expect full airport-style body searches before being allowed onto the set at Granada studios this evening.

The nation has been gripped by the traumas at Weatherfield since the tram crash which wreaked havoc on the Street in Monday’s episode.

Tonight, viewers will discover who has died, and who has survived the carnage, with butcher Ashley Peacock, and veteran corner shop boss Rita Sullivan, among the most likely victims.

The Shropshire Star took to the streets to see what county fans thought of this week’s dramas.
