Suspect’s apology to Knighton wheelchair theft victim

Police have arrested a man for stealing and damaging a wheelchair belonging to an elderly disabled man in Mid Wales, leaving him to walk home on “treacherous” ice during the big freeze.

The man, 25, who has been issued with a police caution, promised to contact the victim to apologise and to offer to buy a new wheelchair, officers said today.

The theft happened outside a pub in Knighton on November 28.

Constable Bill Cowan, of the town’s police, said the “thoughtless” individual had left the man to struggle home in extreme conditions.

He said: “A 25-year-old local male has been arrested, interviewed and issued with a formal police caution for being involved in causing damage to this wheelchair.

“This local male has also agreed to contact the victim and to offer recompense in respect of the damage caused and apologise.”

He added that the wheelchair owner, a local man with a walking disability “was forced to walk home in freezing and treacherous conditions”.

The incident was the latest in a long line of criminal damage incidents in Knighton with police recording more than a dozen incidents in the last three weeks.

Other incidents have included eggs being thrown at vehicles, a bus shelter damaged and windscreen wipers torn off.
