Shropshire dad’s snowy ride in memory of daughter
Tuesday 7th December 2010, 11:29AM GMT.
A Shropshire father battled snowy conditions to cycle up Snowdon to raise thousands of pounds in memory of his daughter.
Karl Hartey, Stuart Jermy, vicar of St John’s Church in Weston Rhyn, and Paul Seager scaled the mountain on their bikes on Saturday to raise money for the Charlotte Hartey Foundation.
The foundation was set up by family members after Charlotte’s death in July last year. Charlotte, 16, of Bronygarth near Oswestry, was misdiagnosed
as having swine flu and died from complications caused by tonsillitis.
The men were determined to reach the top after setting off at 10am. They managed to reach the summit at 2pm before descending again.
The trio cycled through rain, sleet, snow and then driving snow and endured falls on the slippery paths.
But, Mr Hartey said, they still managed to keep a smile on their faces.
He said: “It was incredibly difficult and the snow was waist deep on the top. It was very challenging but we were focused. We had a vision and we went for it.
“We were concerned about being stuck in the dark so we had to go as quickly as we could. We got back at 3.55pm. Everyone did a fantastic job. We were very pleased to get to the top as it was a long haul to get there.”
Mr Seager said: “We were very pleased to have completed it. I didn’t think we would get as far as we did so very pleased to have achieved it.”
Mr Hartey revealed the sponsored cycle ride helped to raise about £2,000 in total.
The joint takings are to be split between the church, to complete building work, and to help raise funds for the foundation, which gives grants to good causes.
Mr Hartey said: “I want to say a big thank you to all the people who sponsored us and to Stuart Jermy and Paul Seager for making a difficult day fun.
“It is easier when you have got a smile on your face.”
