Ellesmere vandals causing mayhem

Tuesday 7th December 2010, 6:00PM GMT.

Civic leaders in Ellesmere today raised serious concerns a gang was causing damage across the town, which has been hit by a spate of vandalism.

In the last three weeks a number of incidents has been reported including damage to cars and bus stops.

These follow incidents in September where lead was allegedly stolen four times in one week from the town hall.

Councillor Pat McLaughlin, Mayor of Ellesmere, said she believed the incidents were being caused by a gang of youths and has called on police to come down hard on those responsible.

“It is absolutely disgusting that people have been going around the town causing damage,” she said.

“Following the theft of lead, in the last few weeks a pain of glass in the bus shelter in Cross Street has been damaged which will cost about £400 to replace.

“There have also been incidents of flower pots outside someone’s home being thrown across the road and door mirrors being ripped off cars. We believe they are a gang of youths, probably fuelled by alcohol.

“We are going to invite the police to January’s town council meeting to find out what is being done or can be done to stop it.”

West Mercia Police are asking for anyone spotting the vandals in action to call the police as soon as possible on 03003 333000.
