Council debates future of Oswestry pub
Tuesday 7th December 2010, 12:00AM GMT.
An Oswestry pub which sold alcohol to under-age drinkers will fight for its licence tomorrow.
Shropshire Council’s licensing committee will meet in the council chamber in Castle View in the town to review the licence of the Eagles in Bailey Head.
This year the pub was caught serving under-age drinkers and was shut down for a weekend as a warning.
Since then the licensee has left and new landlady, Theresa O’Meara, has taken over.
She has pledged to drive out under-age drinkers.
Police invoked new powers to close the Eagles for 48 hours from 5pm on October 29 – over the busy Halloween weekend.
It followed a joint Shropshire Trading Standards and police test purchase operation at the end of July when under-age volunteers bought alcohol without challenge.
West Mercia Police also made an application for a review of a premises licence on the grounds that operations at the premises undermined the Protection of Children from Harm section of the Licensing Act.
Councillors on Shropshire Council’s north licensing sub-committee can decide to take no further action or a range of measures.
These can include formal warnings, modifying licence conditions, excluding a licensable activity from the scope of the licence, removing the designated premises supervisor, suspending the licence for up to three months or revoking it.
