Bishop’s Castle biomass bid letter plea
Tuesday 7th December 2010, 11:29AM GMT.
Campaigners staging a last-ditch bid to stop a £5 million biomass plant being built in Bishop’s Castle have sent SOS letters to all Shropshire councillors ahead of a key meeting.
Members of the Bishop’s Castle group claim members of Shropshire Council have so far been unaware of the full details of plans for the biomass plant at Bishop’s Castle Business Park.
They have now laid out their case, which they say is based on three-and-a-half years of campaigning and researching, in a letter to all 74 Shropshire councillors.
A debate will be held at a full Shropshire Council meeting at Shirehall on Thursday, where campaigners will be given the opportunity to state their case.
The debate was triggered after almost 1,500 people signed a petition opposing a decision by the council’s cabinet to allow the sale of land to Bishop’s Castle Biomass Power for the biomass plant.
The campaigners had hoped to postpone the meeting to allow the town’s Shropshire councillor, Peter Phillips, to attend, but the request was rejected. Councillor Phillips will be attending a hospital appointment.
Paula Middleton, secretary of the Bishop’s Castle Group, said: “Our evidence is, that the majority of the councillors are unaware of the details of the proposals and the sense of outrage by the local people, that we are being dictated to as to what is perceived to be good for us. We know it is not good for Bishop’s Castle nor Shropshire.”
Simon Alton, spokesman for Shropshire Council, said the campaigners were entitled to write to councillors if they wished and confirmed the issue would be debated at Thursday’s meeting.
The meeting at Shirehall starts at 10am.
