Work was expected to begin today on a £250 million scheme to transform the centre of Telford.

Builders were due to move in on the Southwater area of the town to put up security fencing ahead of moving diggers onto the site.

Telford & Wrekin Council last week appointed McPhillips in Wellington as the main contractors, which plans to put up a base for builders today.

The first phase of work will see the Southwater lake drained and filled in to create a development plot for the borough council’s new Civic Office. A new lake of equivalent size will be built alongside the site.

The build will include office space, a new library, two new hotels, bars, restaurants, cafés and shops, a leisure hub with a space for a leisure pool and multi-screen cinema.

There will also be hundreds of homes including apartments and town houses, a community medical facility and a new Meeting Point House.

Fish from the Southwater lake have already been relocated and ecologists have said ducks, moorhens and other birds at the site will relocate themselves after work beings.

Councillor Andrew Eade, leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said the initial work would focus on getting the site ready for major public and private sector investment.
