Have a drink to landlady Flossie

The mug which has immortalised Flossie Lane

She was one of England’s best known landladies who had run one of the oldest parlour pubs in the country.

And now Flossie Lane, who was the landlady of The Sun Inn in Leintwardine, near Ludlow, for 74 years until her death, aged 94, last year, is being immortalised on a limited edition mug.

She has already been depicted in a carved misericord — a small wooden shelf on the underside of a folding seat.

It is in Saint Mary Magdalene Church in Leintwardine.

And the mugs were due to go on sale today to raise money for the church. They will be sold as part of Leintwardine Snowman Festival, in which groups make model snowmen out of a range of materials, except snow.

The event was running from 10am to 4pm.

The pen and tint drawing on the mugs is by artist Jane Wells. It was based on the misericord which was commissioned and installed in the church this year.

Misericords or “mercy seats” are the tip-up carved seats in the choir stalls of large parish churches.

In medieval times they were used as props by the dean, priests and monks of a cathedral as support when standing for long periods during services.

They also generated income as the carving could be sponsored to commemorate someone or an event.

The original carving sho-wing Miss Lane was done by Andy Pearson, a carver of international reputation who lives in the parish.

Miss Lane’s misericord shows the River Teme, fam- ous for grayling fishing, which flows through the village.

Many of the visiting fishermen ended up at the Sun Inn, so Miss Lane is featured pouring ale from a barrel and regulars enjoying a pint in the Sun Inn’s Red Brick Bar.

Gary Seymour, who took over the Sun Inn with Nick Davis after Miss Lane’s death, said they would be taking an order of the mugs to sell in the pub.

He said: “It’s a nice idea and it shows she’s fondly remembered.

“We are happy to sell them from the pub and raise money for the church.”
