Hundreds of children in Newport were left dazzled after lining the streets to catch a glimpse of the town’s Christmas lights being switched on.
Despite the frosty temperatures, the town’s High Street was packed last night as families from across the borough turned out to see the night sky lit up.
Six-year-old Katy Ingram, who attends Newport Infant School, got to flick the switch after scooping first prize in a stocking decoration competition held by the town council earlier in the year. Three judges picked Katy’s design from scores of entries.
Councillor Tim Nelson, from Newport Town Council, said that the event was a complete success.
“There were about 300 people there and it was a lovely family occasion,” said Councillor Nelson.
He added: “People of all ages were out, despite it being bitterly cold.
“But it snowed on cue when things got going, it was wonderful to see.
“There is a lot of doom and gloom around at the moment but this was a really happy occasion.
“On behalf of the town council I would like to thank everyone who made it such a special evening.”
This will be the last year the Tree of Light is switched on at St Nicholas’ Church.
Regeneration plans for the town will see the tree dug up and the lights go elsewhere.

The lights in Newport are always a welcome sight to drivers like me not from around those parts. They always look very homely. Keep up the good work.
