Fear maternity services loss to cause hardship

Maternity services must be retained at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital otherwise it would cause a severe hardship to many expectant mothers in Mid Wales, it has been claimed.

Wyn Williams, the Welsh Assembly candidate for Montgomeryshire, and Shropshire councillor Heather Kidd said pregnant women in Mid Wales relied on the services and would have to travel an extra 20 minutes if the service was moved to Telford.

Mr Williams is now hoping to meet with Shropshire health bosses to discuss his concerns.

It comes after a forum of doctors put forward a series of options for reorganising the way Shropshire’s hospital services are provided at Shrewsbury and Telford.

But they have suggested midwife-led maternity units should continue to be run at the RSH and the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.

Health chiefs have war-ned changes to the way services are delivered are vital or key facilities could be lost to the hospitals in Stoke, Wolverhampton and Birmingham.

Mr Williams said: “The location in Shrewsbury is central to the area that this service serves, an area which includes Powys as well as the whole of Shropshire.

“We’re now hoping to meet with clinicians from the trust in the next few weeks to take us through their proposals.”

Councillor Kidd said: “In a big rural area like ours it is critical that these services are delivered relatively near to the services concerned.

“These services must stay in Shrewsbury,” she added.
