Shrewsbury knifeman jailed for raid on off-licence
Friday 3rd December 2010, 6:59PM GMT.
A 26-year-old Shrewsbury man who robbed a shop assistant at knifepoint while high on a cocktail of alcohol and crack cocaine has been sent to prison for three-and-a-half years.
Billy Price, of Middleton Square, was jailed after admitting robbery and possessing a bladed article at the Everyman’s off licence in Shrewsbury on October 30.
Mr Rob Edwards, prosecuting, said Price had been in the store earlier that day and had bought alcohol.
Later that evening he returned when the shop assistant was alone.
Mr Edwards said Price had armed himself with a knife with a 3ins blade and told the assistant to open the cash drawer on the till.
Price took between £250 and £300 from the till and as he left he took a bottle of vodka worth £11.99.
In police interview Price said he had been drinking and had taken crack cocaine before the robbery. He carried it out because he needed more crack cocaine and also money to pay off a drug debt.
Mr Mike Sherwood-Smith, for Price, said at the time of the offences, his client’s life was spiralling out of control. Price had a drug problem and owed a considerable amount of money to his dealer.
Judge Robert Trevor-Jones told Price he had committed the offences while subject to a cocktail of alcohol and cocaine and he had “raised the stakes” by arming himself with a knife.
