Oswestry superstore bid clears final hurdle
Friday 3rd December 2010, 11:29AM GMT.
The last hurdle has been cleared for a controversial multi-million pound supermarket to go up in Shropshire after government planning bosses refused to intervene in the matter.
The Department of Communities and Local Government today said a decision by Shropshire Council to grant planning permission for a supermarket on Oswestry’s Smithfield livestock site should stand.
Simon Hoare, planning consultant for Smithfield developers Liberty Mercian, said he was delighted.
He said developers could now press ahead with the plans, which will create more than 800 jobs.
“I am over the moon,” he said. “I have been working on this for four years so this is quite exciting.”
Shropshire councillors granted planning permission to Liberty Mercian to build on part of the Smithfield site last month.
It was one of three sites that councillors had to choose from.
The news comes as Tesco’s plans to build a supermarket in Whitchurch also cleared its first hurdle.
The plans for a 42,000 sq ft store moved a step closer after members of Whitchurch Rugby Club gave the scheme their backing at a behind-closed-doors meeting.
The retail giant wants to build a store with a 438- space car park and petrol station on part of the club’s Edgeley Park site.
The Whitchurch August Bank Holiday Show & Fete Committee owns Edgeley Park and leases it to Whitchurch Rugby Club and Whitchurch Hockey Club.
