Tributes paid to Telford mine clearance worker
Thursday 2nd December 2010, 7:00PM GMT.
Tributes were today paid to a Shropshire man who died in an explosion while working to save the lives of others in Afghanistan.
Mark Fitzpatrick, from Telford, was disposing of ammunition in the Parwan province on November 20 when the tragedy happened.
The 34-year-old had been working for DynCorp International, an American company, clearing mines and other explosive devices left over from previous wars.
His funeral will be held on Monday at St John’s Church, Bishops Wood, near Weston-under-Lizard, at noon, and afterwards at Shifnal Golf Club. All are welcome. Donations at the funeral will be split between Help for Heroes and Friends of The Wounded EOD Warrior Foundations.
Dozens of messages have poured onto Mr Fitzpatrick’s Facebook page.
Meanwhile, a coroner has opened the inquest on a Shropshire soldier who died in a bomb blast in Afghanistan on Remembrance Sunday.
Ranger Aaron McCormick, of 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, based at Tern Hill, near Market Drayton, died while out on patrol in the Nad’e Ali area of Helmand province on November 14.
Mr David Ridley, HM Coroner for Wiltshire and Swindon, opened the inquest in Salisbury on Tuesday.
