Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski’s £7,240 claims
Thursday 2nd December 2010, 11:29AM GMT.
Shrewsbury & Atcham MP Daniel Kawczynski today maintained his reputation for unextravagant expenses claims, after a watchdog published its latest accounts.
MPs were paid £3.1 million in expenses in the first three and a half months after the General Election, details published today showed.
A breakdown of 22,000 claims submitted between May 7 and August 31 by 576 of the 650 MPs was released by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority.
Mr Kawczynski claimed £7,240, making 62 requests for reimbursement.
His highest claim was for £1,449 for accommodation while his smallest claim was £3.70 for parking on June 9.
He claimed for parking, rent, hotels, phone and internet use, stationery and food and drink at Parliament.
The watchdog has decided not to release copies of individual receipts because it says it would be too expensive.
The figures are the first published by the body set up to enforce tighter rules on MPs’ use of taxpayers’ cash in the wake of last year’s expenses scandal.
The figures came out as anger among MPs over the handling of the system was set to be renewed in the Commons.
A backbench motion condemning the “unnecessarily high costs and inadequacies” of the new system and calling for a “simpler” alternative will be debated later.
The new authority has tried to dampen criticism by declining to publish rejected claims until the MPs and staff have got more used to the system.
Prime Minister David Cameron claimed £2,581.13 during the period while the Chancellor, George Osborne, submitted claims for £582.62.
